Yay! The Utah Jazz are now contenders for the NBA title. Well, not exactly, but at least they showed they weren’t reluctant in pulling the trigger on a trade. Where’s are shooting guard we need?
“The Utah Jazz made only one minor deal before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, acquiring veteran big man Alan Henderson from Philadelphia in exchange for a swap of second-round draft picks, and cash consideration going from Philadelphia to Utah.
The move, however, is not expected to impact the Jazz’s current 14-man roster. That is because Utah is expected to waive Henderson, who has played 34 games and averaged 3.5 points in a mostly reserve role for the Sixers this season.
The trade will lead to the Jazz having a better second-round pick, though details on the second-round picks involved were not immediately available.”

I like this move. The Jazz have had great success the last two years in the second round with Miles, Brown and Millsap all showing promise and making contributions at one time or another. With this being the “deepest” draft in years, the Jazz could really benefit from this move. Best of all, it cost them nothing.

The Jazz should have pursued Michael Pietrus in a trade. Rumor had it that the Warriors, who have a logjam at the 2, were shopping him. He would be a great fit. I am disappointed that nothing happened to upgrade the 2 position.

An excerpt from True Hoop concerning the trade:
“Jonathan Givony explains that Sixers/Jazz trade: Barring some sort of catastrophe that sees the Jazz lose the rest of their games and the Knicks win the rest of theirs…Utah will get New York’s 2007 2nd rounder this year or next (and not Philly’s, because they traded their 07 2nd rounder away already last year in return for Bobby Jones) as a part of this trade. In return, Philly gets under the luxury tax, which will likely save them a couple of million dollar…The Jazz had an extra roster spot and room to spare under the luxury tax, which helped facilitate this trade. The Sixers sent cash over to cover the rest of Henderson’s salary. So essentially, the Jazz move up 19 spots (according to our current projections) for “free”, and the Sixers move down 19 spots and likely save themselves a few million dollars.”

Good Deal for the Jazz! But i would’ve much rather seen them bring in a player who could’ve helped the Jazz in the Playoffs. Someone with experience. However, that pick combined with our own 1st round and Giricek, may be able to land us in the lottery this June. But oh well, the Jazz will be a pretty strong under dog come may.
